01. How a scale guesses what you're made of

There are four electrodes hiding in the platform. The scale sends a tiny, painless current through your feet and measures how much your tissues resist it: water and muscle conduct electricity well, fat doesn't. An algorithm then plugs that resistance — along with your height, weight, age, and sex — into a statistical formula and outputs a body-composition estimate. The method is called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).

The key word is "estimate." The scale isn't scanning your body; it's running math built on population averages. And on foot-to-foot models, the current loops through your legs and hips while mostly skipping your torso and arms — which means belly fat is exactly what these scales see worst. Models with a handheld grip and eight electrodes do better, but they're still calculators making assumptions.

Head-to-head comparisons with DEXA (the X-ray reference method) show consumer scales nailing some people and missing others by 5+ points — and there's no way to know which group you're in. The good news is repeatability: under consistent conditions, the direction of change your scale reports is honest.

03. What throws the numbers off

BIA is sensitive to the state your body is in at the moment you step on. The main sources of noise:

  • Hydration. Being dehydrated reads as more fat; extra fluid reads as less.
  • Meals and drinks. A full stomach changes both weight and conductivity.
  • Workouts. Sweat loss and blood-flow shifts skew readings for hours afterward.
  • Hot showers and baths. Warm skin and dilated vessels alter resistance.
  • Alcohol the night before. Dehydrates you into a fake "fat gain" the next morning.
  • Carpet. Scales need a hard, level floor — even plain weight drifts on soft surfaces.

04. How to weigh in so the data means something

Same conditions, comparable numbers. Step on first thing in the morning, after the bathroom, before food or coffee, barefoot, with the scale in the same spot on hard flooring. Weigh in 3–4 times a week — or daily, if the number doesn't stress you out.

Then read the line, not the dots. Day-to-day swings of 2–4 lb are water and food, and the fat percentage bounces right along with them. Real change shows up over 2–4 weeks: a weekly average drifting down by 0.5–1 lb, a fat trend sloping the right way over a month.

Can you trust the body fat percentage?

Not as an absolute number — the error can hit 3–8 percentage points. As a trend across weeks under consistent conditions, yes.

Why did my weight jump 3 lb overnight?

Water, food in transit, and glycogen stores. Body fat doesn't move that fast in either direction.

Are scales with hand electrodes better?

Yes — the current also travels through your upper body, so estimates are steadier. Still an estimate, though.

Smart scale or calipers?

In skilled hands, calipers are comparable or better, but they take practice. For self-tracking, a scale plus a tape measure at your waist is the easier combo.

Will my scale match a DEXA scan?

Probably not — different method, different math. Only compare your scale's readings against its own history.

A smart scale measures weight extremely well and tracks body-composition direction reasonably well — as long as you keep conditions consistent. Ignore the absolute fat percentage; trust weekly averages, the monthly trend, and a tape measure on the side. Used that way, an imperfect gadget becomes a genuinely useful tool.
